Mary Bailey has given over 30 years’ service to her parish, which includes St Joseph's Church in the village of Hurst Green, and St Peter's Church at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire. The presentation came as a complete surprise to Mary, but everyone agreed that she is a most worthy recipient!
For the church, Mary served as a sacristan, organised the rotas for flowers each week, and helped ensure the chapel was kept clean. She continues to be a reader for the parish, assists at funerals with thurifer duties as required, and has been the go-to person when parish socials require organisation of sustenance - food and cakes!
As well as her longstanding devotion to the church, Mary has a direct connection to Stonyhurst College. Her father worked at the College as a joiner and Mary grew up on the estate. The visitor book for her parent’s guest house includes the signature of JRR Tolkien, among others.
In addition, Mary has been an official tour guide for the College and has also participated in the Stonyhurst Lourdes Pilgrimage.
Mary worked for many years as a teacher at the Paddock House Convent Grammar School in Accrington, rising to Head of English. Some of the parishioners were taught by her, and many former pupils remember her with fondness and affection.
We are honoured to present Mary with the Campion Medal in recognition of all that she does for the church, the community, and Stonyhurst College.
